Research and Ethics
At Paper Trail, our goal is to preserve and share forgotten family histories with accuracy, curiosity, and respect. Every story is researched using historical records and is presented to educate, document, and encourage an appreciation for the lives of those who came before us.
Our Research
Whenever possible, our stories are based on publicly available historical sources, which may include:
-
Census records
-
Birth, marriage, and death records
-
Newspapers
-
Court records
-
Probate files
-
Cemetery records
-
Military records
-
City directories
-
Historical archives
-
Other publicly available genealogical resources
Historical records are created by people, and people sometimes make mistakes. Dates, spellings, relationships, and other details may vary between sources. When conflicting information exists, we evaluate the available evidence and present what we believe to be the most accurate interpretation at the time of publication.
As new records become available, our understanding of a story may change. We welcome credible corrections and additional documentation.
Historical Interpretation
Our content distinguishes documented facts from reasonable historical interpretation. When conclusions or theories are offered, they are presented as interpretation based on available evidence—not as established fact.
Historical accounts, particularly newspaper reporting, may contain inaccuracies, bias, or incomplete information reflective of the time in which they were written.
Respect for Living Individuals
Our work focuses on historical events and individuals, not on living family members.
We make every effort to respect the privacy of living people. We do not intentionally publish private personal information about living individuals, including addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, or other identifying information.
If a family tree is displayed, living individuals may be omitted or identified only as "Living" to help protect their privacy.
Community Expectations
We ask all visitors to treat the families connected to these stories with respect.
Please do not use information found on this website or our social media platforms to contact, investigate, harass, or otherwise disturb living family members. Historical research is intended to preserve the past—not to create hardship for people living today.
Comments or messages that encourage harassment, intimidation, or the sharing of private information may be removed.

Genealogy is an evolving field. We recognize that new records and evidence can emerge over time.
